2027–28 FAFSA: What Students and Parents Should Do First
The 2027–28 FAFSA is already available. That is earlier than many families expect, so students who will attend college, career school, or trade school between July 1, 2027, and June 30, 2028 can start now.
The form itself is shorter than the old reputation suggests. The part that slows families down is usually not typing. It is figuring out who needs an account, who has to contribute information, and which school and state deadlines come first.
Start With the Correct FAFSA Year
Use the 2027–28 form for aid tied to the 2027–28 school year. If you are applying for aid for the current 2026–27 year, use that form instead. Summer terms can be confusing, so ask the school which FAFSA year applies before submitting the wrong one.
Federal Student Aid says the 2027–28 form is available now. It is free. If a website asks you to pay a fee to complete the FAFSA, leave and go to the official .gov site.
Create the StudentAid.gov Accounts First
The student needs a StudentAid.gov account. A parent or spouse who is required to contribute information also needs their own account. Do not share one login across the family.
Use names and personal details carefully. Small mismatches can create unnecessary trouble later. If a parent does not have a Social Security number, Federal Student Aid has a process that still allows that person to create an account and complete their required section.
Know Who Counts as a Contributor
A contributor is not automatically the person paying the bill. It is the person the FAFSA rules require to provide information. For many dependent students that means one or both parents. Married independent students may need a spouse.
The form has tools to help identify the correct parent in separated, divorced, or remarried families. Use those tools instead of guessing. A wrong assumption can turn a simple form into weeks of correction.
Do Not Wait for Every Paper Document
Most people can transfer federal tax information into the form after giving consent. You may still need current balances for cash, savings, checking, investments, business interests, or other items the form asks about.
A basic document organizer can help keep school letters and aid records together. A small document scanner is useful if your family still has a lot of paper, but you do not need special equipment to file the FAFSA.
Watch the Current Federal Student Aid Walkthrough
Federal Student Aid published a newer video in 2026 that shows how to start the form, select your role, verify information, and give consent for tax-data transfer.
List Schools Even if the Decision Is Not Final
You can send FAFSA information to schools you are considering. You do not have to wait until you know exactly where you will attend. The federal form lets you list multiple schools so they can receive the information after processing.
Then check each school’s own financial-aid page. Federal deadlines are not the only deadlines. States and colleges can have earlier dates for grants or institutional aid.
After You Submit, Keep Watching the Status
A submitted form is not always a finished process. If a parent or spouse still needs to complete a contributor section, the FAFSA cannot move forward normally. Watch your email and StudentAid.gov status for missing signatures or required action.
This is similar to any state or federal paperwork. Our guide to Alabama teacher certification makes the same practical point: the application is only one part of the process. Deadlines, supporting records, and follow-up matter too.
A Simple First-Day Checklist
Create the needed StudentAid.gov accounts. Open the correct 2027–28 form. Let the student complete the student section first. Invite the correct contributor. Review the school list. Submit only after every required person has finished their section.

The Main Thing Is to Start
You do not need to finish your entire college plan before filing. The FAFSA is a gateway to federal aid and is also used by many states and schools. Starting early gives you more time to fix an account problem, add a school, or respond to a request before a local deadline arrives.
