What Size Is A Garden Hose Fitting?
A garden hose fitting looks small. But when it leaks, sprays, cross-threads, or will not connect, it can ruin a simple yard job fast.
So let’s make this easy.
In the United States, the standard garden hose fitting is usually 3/4-inch GHT, which means Garden Hose Thread. You may also see it called 3/4-inch NH, or National Hose thread.
That does not always mean the hose itself is 3/4 inch wide inside. The fitting and the hose diameter are two different things.
The Standard Size
How To Make A Japanese Garden. Most garden hoses, outdoor faucets, spray nozzles, sprinklers, and hose-end tools use 3/4-inch garden hose thread.
A common garden hose thread is listed as 3/4 inch with 11.5 threads per inch. ASME’s hose coupling thread standard covers threaded parts used on hose couplings, valves, nozzles, and fittings for domestic, industrial, and general service.
That is the plain answer.
Most of the time, when you buy a normal hose nozzle or sprinkler in the U.S., it is made to fit the normal outdoor spigot and garden hose.
Hose Size Is Not The Same As Fitting Size
This is where people get confused.
A hose may be sold as 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, or 3/4 inch. That number is usually the inside diameter of the hose. It affects water flow.
But the end fitting may still be the standard 3/4-inch GHT.
So a 5/8-inch hose can still have a 3/4-inch fitting.
In other words, the hose body and the hose connector are not the same measurement.
What GHT Means
GHT means Garden Hose Thread. These threads are straight. They are not tapered like many pipe threads.
That matters because garden hose fittings usually seal with a rubber washer inside the female end. The threads pull the two pieces together. The washer does the sealing.
If the washer is missing, cracked, flat, or twisted, the fitting may leak even if the threads are the right size.
So before you buy a new hose, check the washer. It may be a 25-cent problem, not a hose problem.
Male And Female Hose Ends
Garden hoses have two ends.
The female end usually connects to the faucet. It has threads on the inside.
The male end usually connects to a nozzle, sprinkler, or another hose. It has threads on the outside.
If you are buying an adapter, look at both ends. You may need female GHT to male GHT, or male GHT to NPT, or another mix.
The words male and female matter more than the color, brand, or metal type.
Why NPT Is Different
NPT means National Pipe Thread. It is common on plumbing parts. But it is not the same as GHT.
NPT threads are tapered. GHT threads are straight. They do not seal the same way.
A 3/4-inch pipe fitting and a 3/4-inch garden hose fitting are not automatically the same thing.
This is why people buy an adapter, twist it on, and wonder why it leaks. The sizes may sound close, but the thread type is wrong.

What To Measure
If you are not sure what you have, measure the fitting, not just the hose.
Look at the outside diameter of the male threaded end. Standard 3/4-inch garden hose thread has an outside diameter close to 1.06 inches and 11.5 threads per inch, according to fitting guides that describe U.S. garden hose thread dimensions.
That sounds odd at first. Why is a 3/4-inch thread about 1 inch wide outside?
Because the name is not the same as a simple ruler reading across the outside.
This happens with many thread systems. The name is part of the standard, not always a direct outside measurement.
Common Hose Diameters
For home use, the most common hose body size is often 5/8 inch. It gives decent flow without being too heavy.
A 1/2-inch hose is lighter. It may be fine for small patios, balconies, or light watering.
A 3/4-inch hose can carry more water. It may be better for long runs, large yards, farms, or jobs where flow matters.
Stroll Through the Summer Garden. But again, all three may still use the same 3/4-inch GHT fitting.
Why Your Hose Leaks
If the size is standard, leaks usually come from another issue.
The washer may be missing.
The washer may be old.
The fitting may be cross-threaded.
The fitting may be cracked.
The faucet threads may be worn.
The connection may be too loose.
The connection may be too tight, which can crush the washer.
The easiest fix is to replace the washer and reconnect the hose by hand. Do not force it. If it does not thread smoothly, back it off and start again.
Brass, Plastic, Or Aluminum?
Brass fittings are strong and common. They tend to hold up well.
Plastic fittings are light and cheap. They can work fine, but they may crack sooner.
Aluminum fittings can be light, but they may seize to other metals. If an aluminum hose end gets stuck on a brass faucet, it can be a headache.
For most homes, brass is a safe choice.

If you are buying a normal hose nozzle, sprinkler, timer, or hose repair end in the U.S., look for:
3/4-inch GHT.
Garden hose thread.
Female or male end, based on what you need.
A rubber washer.
Lead-free or drinking-water-safe labeling if you will use it for pets, food gardens, RVs, or drinking water.
